I’m melting…

We’ve had quite the heat wave here over the past few days.  Our normally cool basement apartment has been sweltering and on Sunday I discovered that UBC likes to save money and not air condition its buildings on weekends.  Yuck!

On Saturday I ran in the Summerfast 10k at Stanley Park.  The race was early in the morning and right on the water, so while it was still quite hot it could have been much much worse. The race wasn’t chip-timed (surprising!) so I’m not sure when or if the results will be posted online. My goal was to come in under an hour (I am a SLOW runner) and I just barely made it.  There were 350 runners and I started in the middle of the group so it took me about 10 seconds after the official start time to actually cross the start line. My wristwatch had my time at 59:45, but I imagine my recorded time will be closer to 59:55.

Observant readers of this website’s sidebar will notice that I have gone completely insane and decided to sign up for a half marathon in November! Since I have absolutely zero knowledge of how to train for such a thing I’ve also signed up for a half marathon clinic at a local running shop.  Hopefully they’ll be able to whip me into shape in time. My eventual goal is to run in Hamilton’s historic Round the Bay Road Race (30k) next March.

Speaking of Hamilton, later this week I’m off to visit my family there, and then it’s on to Halifax for a couple weeks of fun, sun, and pubs.  I’ve been looking forward to this trip ever since we booked our plane tickets back in March. I’ll have to take it easy my first week on the east coast, though, as I’ll be doing a triathlon and a road race over the August long weekend there.

Cheap night at the movies

We went to see the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie tonight. Our original plan to see it at the local big box multiplex was foiled when we arrived to find all of the showings before 10pm sold out. So we headed to our neighbourhood two-screen theatre, which we had never been to before. We figured the seats might not be as comfy, but there would definitely be tickets available.

Dan walked up to the cash and asked for two tickets. The register rang and showed $8.00.

“Actually, we wanted two tickets,” Dan explained.

“Yes, two tickets. $4 each,” explained the cashier, “It’s Tuesday, so it’s half off the regular $8 price.”

I couldn’t stop chuckling to myself all night. We’re so used to paying overpriced movie theatre prices that we couldn’t even fathom the idea that two tickets could possible cost less than $16, even on half-price Tuesday. (I didn’t even know anyone still did half-price Tuesday!)

We’ll definitely be seeing more movies at the local little theatre… Although perhaps not 2.5 hour epics like tonight’s film; After that much time the cheap seats definitely took their toll on my neck and legs.
