Goodbye grad school, hello real world

As I alluded to in an earlier post, I’m experiencing some major changes in my life at the moment. I have decided to take a leave of absence from my doctoral work at UBC and pursue full time employment. This decision was not made lightly or hastily! It’s something I had been thinking about for [...]

Lazy Sunday

Conferences are so much fun, but also oh-so-tiring! I attended my first Northern Voice this past Friday and Saturday and had a great time. While blogging and social media aren’t really related to my personal area of study in HCI (I study people collaborating in the same space, rather than online) they are definitely areas [...]

(b)logging

I’m shamelessly stealing Tony’s conversation posting style on this one… But that’s okay because he was the other half of the conversation. K: So I decided to register for a blogging conference that’s happening in the forestry building at UBC next month. T: Really?! K: Yeah, i figure it’s good to see what’s going on [...]

Wiped

I agree with Airdrie; Blogging every day is hard! I stayed up until the wee hours last night (5am this morning, really) working on a draft of my thesis proposal, which meant I only got 3 hours of sleep. So rather than blog anything interesting I’m going to go to bed early tonight. *yawn*

Where are all the female PhD’s going?

A study from the National Institute of Health in the U.S. says that many women spend 10-15 years getting advanced education, only to leave academia due to family responsibility and low confidence. Although women comprise nearly half of all undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral scientists nationwide, after committing 10 to 15 years to scientific training, many [...]

It’s funny because it’s true

I always enjoy PhD comic strips but today’s strip is especially funny (and hits rather close to home for me!)

The perfect antidote for a grey, rainy day…

…is finding out you won a scholarship worth two years of PhD funding! The same scholarship you had been turned down for last year and the year before! Hooray for persistence.

Cons and pros

My 2007 has not gotten off to the best start. First, I got a letter from Revenue Canada letting me know there was an error in my 2005 taxes and I owed them lots of money. Then, my running shoes (and with them my $400 orthotics that were less than 6 months old!) disappeared. Finally, [...]

A weekend of work and costume geekery

We launched a new version of Status Report this weekend – It is now driven by a content management system which will make it super-easy to keep up to date. I’m really excited to be involved with this project. Lately I have been a bit down on the whole research thing, as I feel like [...]

Fall update

(Maybe one of these days my blog will change more often than the seasons…) The fall semester is in full swing, and so is my half-marathon clinic. The past month and a half I’ve been splitting my time between puzzling over my algorithms course homework and running all over North Burnaby. Both activities are going [...]
